For you today, I have a really simple Preschool Circle Time song – that has the magical ability to gather the attention and focus of toddlers and preschoolers!

When I first used this song, On My Toe There Is A Flea, in the classroom – I had no idea that it had this power! LOL! I was simply using it as an “Insect Song” to go with our theme.

Additionally, I loved this song because it very simply and easily went up the musical scale and back down, as our fingers – and the “flea” did, too.

And it IS great for all of those things – but the magic happened when, after some jumping and clapping to the song before hand, I simply sat down and, silently, I touched my toe. The children all followed.

Singing slowly, and somewhat quietly up the scale, my fingers moving up my body (and they followed along), you could feel and see their rapt attention.  And they were DELIGHTED by the surprise/silly ending that contrasts with the rest of the song.

IT WAS AMAZING! And from the day on, I used it as a way to focus my group after big activities, A LOT.

My hope is that this song has the same power for you! It’s GREAT to do after a big, gross motor activity, or simply to get everyone’s focus before storytime.

I’d love to hear how it works for you – whether you use it in the classroom, on Zoom or at home! Here is, your new favorite preschool circle time song:

ON MY TOE THERE IS A FLEA

EARLY LEARNING CONCEPTS CHILDREN WILL GET FROM THIS VIDEO...

  • MUSICAL SCALE: In this song we sing up the musical scale and back down, while our hand and arms go up our body and back down. This is a great introduction to what it means and sounds like when the notes and pitches “go up” and “go down” – and the physical experience/representation of it helps to anchor in that learning.
  • FINE & GROSS MOTOR SKILLS:  We use both fine motor and gross motor movement in this song. Our fingers move/crawl up our body for some fine motor work, while our arms reach from our toes to our head for gross motor work. You can switch arms each time to work on both sides of the body, and even stand up to work on the full movement range.
  • FOCUS:   As I mentioned above, this song ends up being a great song for focusing the group. Individually, the children imagine a small point – a flea – on their body, and this helps them practice focusing attention on something small.
