HELLO OCTOBER!
It’s full-on Fall now and therefore, Pumpkin Season and time for preschool pumpkin songs!
When it comes to circle time and music class songs this time of year I feel like it’s not quite time for Halloween songs yet, but we start leaning there.
But you know what, aside from the rhyme (and my song version of) 5 Little Pumpkins, it was hard for me to find some good preschool pumpkin songs.
So over the years I’ve found some (like the Pumpkin Chant), adapted some (5 Little Pumpkins into a jazzy song) and created a couple of my own (Found a Pumpkin and I Dropped My Pumpkin).
So below you’ll find:

1. FOUND A PUMPKIN
I have Piper to thank for this idea! I was telling her how I wanted to make another pumpkin song video with a song just right for the preschool classroom and she simply said “Why don’t you change ‘Found A Peanut’ to “Found a Pumpkin?'”
BRILLIANT CHILD!
And so together we came up with the various verses and movements. “It was goopy” is also a full Piper idea. LOL!
This song leans toward Halloween because the song is about finding a Pumpkin and then carving it into a Jack-o-Lantern. So, if you’re looking for a non-Halloween-ish preschool pumpkin song, check out the Pumpkin Chant or I Dropped My Pumpkin below.
2. PUMPKIN CHANT
This chant I learned from the Jbrary YouTube Channel several years ago. It’s rhythmic, has easy movements and mentions all sorts of fun pumpkin things and treats.
If you’re looking for a non-Halloween pumpkin song/rhyme this is a good one. Although there is the term “pumpkin head” in it, and at the end we say “BOO!” I don’t feel like it is Halloween-ish. I use the term Pumpkin Head as a term of endearment for Piper (is that weird?) and the BOO! at the end is just fun for kids. They love a good surprise ending!
3. 5 LITTLE PUMPKINS – BOOK SONG EDITION
The classic pumpkin rhyme! This rhyme made it’s way into my class and my heart a long long time ago. Then back in 2013, while doing sing-alongs in Brooklyn, NY I wanted to find a way to make things more interactive, so I turned it into a call & response experience with the repetition of “Five Little Pumpkins” with a little tune. Then eventually I addded a tune to the whole thing. So, for my 2016 album, Every Day’s Your Birthday we recorded a very jazzy rendition of it! In this video, I use the recording with Dan Yacarino’s book to so we have a read-along, sing-along experience!
4. I DROPPED MY PUMPKIN
So, this is a VERY adaptable song that I first started using when I was looking for more pumpkin songs. I had these very cute little pumpkins from a Fall Online Playschool sensory activity, and I wanted to use them more.
So, this song “I Dropped My Pumpkin” can be done with anything! I did it in another video with a fish puppet and called it “I Dropped My Fish”. It’s a body part identification song, but it’s also super silly because, well, we keep dropping the pumpkin. Toddlers and preschoolers love some good ol’ slapstick. Especially watching an adult drop things! So, crab a pumpkin stuffy, or make some paper bag pumpkins – anything light weight will do! – and join in the silly fun of I Dropped My Pumpkin!
5. 5 LITTLE PUMPKINS MUSIC VIDEO
I’m not saying I saved the best for last but…..okay, I’m saying I saved the best for last. LOL! I’m biased, obviously, but I love this Music Video of my Five Little Pumpkins song. I got the help of Miss Nina fans from around the globe to help in the making of this And if you’re looking for ideas for for you class or kids at home, watch closely. In this video Rachel Aulet-McGann, who is now the Director of Bronx Baptist Daycare and Learning Center in NY, got her kids together and did some incredible dramatic play, crafting, singing and dancing. You’ll see them with giant Pumpkin masks on, cardboard instruments that they cut out and pretend to play, moving along with motions, playing instruments all together – it looks like they had SO MUCH FUN! And them along with all the other kiddos in my video playing in the leaves and at pumpkin patches, reading along, singing along and moving along make this one of the best videos I’ve got out there! IMHO at least. LOL! Check it out below:
