LET’S BICYCLE!

It’s finally that time of year for bike rides and walks and playing outside in the sunshine! So I thought I’d bring you a preschool bicycle song this week that compliments all the outdoor fun the kiddos are having. And although it’s about bike riding, this song is adaptable to all kinds of movements and/or instrument play.

Before we get to it though, I just want to take a pause to say HELLO to you all! Over the course of this year, the Miss Nina community has expanded A LOT!! We are a global community with subscribers from over 30 different countries around the world. It blows my mind – and I love that we all share the common ground and desire of bringing music, movement, joy and learning to children of all ages, needs and abilities. Thank you for being here!

AND NOW, THIS WEEK’S VIDEO IS…

I HAVE A LITTLE BICYCLE

This is a song and activity that I actually learned over 15 years ago while I was a teacher at Gymboree Play & Music. I had learned it originally as an activity to do with 0 to 6 month olds, having the parent bicycle the baby’s legs while the baby laid on it’s back. And that’s still a great way to do it! Since then, I’ve adapted it in many ways to make it a preschool bicycle song – which you’ll see in today’s video! Great for toddlers, preschool kids and even kindergarten children:

EARLY LEARNING CONCEPTS CHILDREN WILL GET FROM THIS VIDEO…

  • GROSS MOTOR MOVEMENT: Bicycling the legs is great exercise for developing movement and coordination. In this video I demonstrated how to bicycle our legs while leaning back on our arms/elbows, lying on our backs or going way up on our shoulders and elbows. I also demonstrate alternatives of using our arms instead of our legs to “pedal” or roll to experience similar motions with our upper bodies. (You can even have the children stand up and move around the room creatively).
  • BODY CONTROL: One of the very fun things about this song is the STOP & GO  component. In this video I use a red STOP image and a green GO image to help the children start learning about these concepts, words and their associated colors. Learning to stop and quiet our bodies on command, and then go and stop again is a big challenge for our little learners and this is great practice!
  • MUSICAL CONCEPTS: Not only do we work on STOP & GO but we learn, move and experience, FAST & SLOW with this song. A great introductions and/or practice of TEMPO – especially if you are using instruments with this song.
