I’m noticing as I search back over the songs that I loved when I was a little girl, that many of them were high-drama, sad songs. !!
But I remember LOVING them. I remember loving how “something happened” and then when it got better. Or if it didn’t get better, I remember enjoying, although that might not be the right word, feeling the sadness.
I mean, catharsis is common, that’s why we like music and movies, etc. – to experience a depth of feeling we might otherwise not.
However, as a children’s music entertainer, one starts to think that one should not do anything sad or full of conflict – just stay HAPPY for the kids.
But then, we rob them of the rich experience of exploring their feelings in safe way.
And so, this week, I went ahead and performed Señor Don Gato for your kiddos. Its filled with drama, even death, and then has a magical happy attending. And although that sounds like a lot, keep in mind it was one of my favorites when i was about three years old.
Enjoy the video and song and I’ll see you next time.
