IT’S DECEMBER AND HANUKKAH STARTS NEXT FRIDAY!
Here we are – we’ve finally made it to December of this intense and difficult year! I am ready to embrace the holiday season with open arms!
In the preschool setting, we look for ways to focus on the holiday season that are inclusive while also being secular. In the classroom we take a look at all the holidays that are celebrated around the world at this time and HOW they’re celebrated in different countries. We’ll take a look at what is similar and what is different, while also learning about how each of our own families celebrate during this time of year.
And I love that we begin to notice that all of these holidays include an element of LIGHT in their stories and practices: starlight or candlelight or decorating with lights!
Next week, Hanukkah, The Festival Of Lights begins! So…
THIS WEEK’S VIDEO IS:
THE DREIDEL SONG!
The Dreidel is a simple spinning top used to play a game during Hanukkah (but can be played any time of year! ). This song fits well into preschool curriculums this time of year because it meets those criteria I mentioned above: it’s inclusive, instructive about holidays around the world, while also being secular.
And – IT’S FUN! In this video we sing along together and then SPIN ’round and around like a dreidel!
EARLY LEARNING CONCEPTS CHILDREN WILL GET FROM THIS VIDEO…
- That there is a holiday coming up called Hanukkah
- What a Dreidel is, what it looks like and how it spins
- Practice of body control and following directions! We sing along together, and then we spin, but then we have to stop spinning to sing along together again at the end.
